Ottawa city’s transit committee, decided August 20th, against allowing pets on public transit. There was enough big issues facing the Ottawa Public Transit system to think about. There were pros and cons with one OC Transpo bus driver stating it would open the door to all sorts of animals on the bus causing other problems. Bay coun. Alex Cullen wanted a six month trial. He felt having pets allowed on the bus would make things more convenient for pet owners to use the public service. There were other concerns during the debate as to what is considered a service animal and their allowance on the buses. The Ottawa’s bylaw states that in order for it to be considered a service animal it is requred to be trained and registered with a recognized organization. Ottawa’s legal department is reviewing the city’s definition of “service animal” so it will clear up any misconceptions and help clarify the discussion for future areas.
Sorry pet owners who travel on the bus. There may be other ideas that come up in the future that could change this bylaw but as for now you will have to find another way to travel with your pet.
